- Don’t move items that you will never use. Use this opportunity to give them away, sell them or throw them out.
- When taking apart furniture – use packing tape to tape the hardware to the underside of the piece it belongs to.
- Protect moving expensive collectible plates with foam plates or paper plates – they’re already in the shape of a plate – use them in between the ceramic or glass plates.
- Cover the openings of your toiletries with saran wrap, then put the tops back on.
- Place stuffed animals, pillows, sheets and blankets in garbage bags and use them to fill up irregular space in the moving vehicles to provide padding.
- Before you take the clothes hangers off the rods, slip a garbage bag from the bottom up over a group of clothes to keep the clothing together and protect them from getting dirty – it’s a lightweight and cheap garment bag.
- Before disconnecting electronics such as tv and entertainment units, take a quick snapshot of the wire connections with your phone so you can remember how to re-connect.
- In addition to labeling what’s in your boxes, add what room they’ll be going into, as well.
- Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately when you get to your new home and make sure it’s the last thing added to the truck – it will be the first box out of the truck.
- Enlist the help of family and friends – and make sure there’s plenty of pizza, donuts and drinks.
