  1. Don’t move items that you will never use. Use this opportunity to give them away, sell them or throw them out.
  2. When taking apart furniture – use packing tape to tape the hardware to the underside of the piece it belongs to.
  3. Protect moving expensive collectible plates with foam plates or paper plates – they’re already in the shape of a plate – use them in between the ceramic or glass plates.
  4. Cover the openings of your toiletries with saran wrap, then put the tops back on.
  5. Place stuffed animals, pillows, sheets and blankets in garbage bags and use them to fill up irregular space in the moving vehicles to provide padding.
  6. Before you take the clothes hangers off the rods, slip a garbage bag from the bottom up over a group of clothes to keep the clothing together and protect them from getting dirty – it’s a lightweight and cheap garment bag.
  7. Before disconnecting electronics such as tv and entertainment units, take a quick snapshot of the wire connections with your phone so you can remember how to re-connect.
  8. In addition to labeling what’s in your boxes, add what room they’ll be going into, as well.
  9. Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately when you get to your new home and make sure it’s the last thing added to the truck – it will be the first box out of the truck.
  10. Enlist the help of family and friends – and make sure there’s plenty of pizza, donuts and drinks.
